Heuristics is big word that gets thrown around a lot in military and law-enforcement circles when it comes to decision making under stress. It is a word with Greek origins that in simple terms means is acknowledging that a problem must be solved and classical methods of doing so are too timely and therefore ineffective. I say in those circles because one of the most stressful ways to deal with life is to be on the business end of a gun and not know how to handle yourself.
